The Department of Entomology was established in 1859 to focus on teaching, research, regulation, extension services, and instructional aspects of entomology. The collection consists of such materials as articles, speeches, and photographs created by the department or its faculty members and documents the administration of the department as well as many of its experiments and projects.

William Elbert Bickley was a zoologist, entomologist (specializing in mosquitoes), and professor of entomology at the University of Maryland from 1949 to 1978. Bickley was born on 20 January 1914 in Knoxville, Tennesse. He received a bachelor's degree in agriculture from University of Tennessee in 1934, and later received master's and doctoral degrees from University of Maryland. Theodore Lemuel Bissell was born in St. Mary's, Ohio, on December 9, 1899. He attended the Maryland State College of Agriculture, now the University of Maryland, College Park, where he received a B. S. in entomology in 1920. The Department of Entomology of the University of Maryland can trace its beginning to the origins of the Maryland Agricultural College. When the college opened on October 6, 1859, the chair of Botany and Entomology was vacant, but only briefly.
